Midwives Saving Lives

Shiphrah and Puah

When you help the Hebrew women as they give birth, watch     as they deliver. If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a                 girl, let her live. - Exodus 1:16

Shiphrah and Puah sat at the birthing stool, ushering into         the world a little person for whom God had big plans.

These two midwives defied Pharaoh's edict to kill all      Hebrew male babies. Although their own names may be scarecly remembered, the name of one—for whom they were willing to risk their lives—is remembered and revered for all time:

   Moses.

Of the five women God used to spare, and care for, infant Moses, these two courageous midwives are perhaps the greatest unsung heroes. They chose to defy the “god” of Egypt, and trust the Almighty God of the Hebrews.

Their story is proof that when we choose to obey God over man—to respond to His leading and rely on His power—you and I can make a difference.

“Shiphrah…and…Puah…feared God…they let the boys live.” Exodus 1:15-17

Shiphrah and Puah’s story inspires me to:

  •      obey God’s will over man’s,
  •      choose life over death, and others’ well-being over my own,
  •      assist God in spiritual birthing of new generations, and
  •      step out in obedience, courage and faith from my tiny corner of the world, and of history.

Think you’re insignificant? Can’t make a difference? Think again. As part of God’s grand plan, we can help change the world: one baby step, one courageous decision, one heartbeat, at a time.
